Piano Lessons

The classical difference

Why classical training matters

The difference between a classically trained teacher and other piano teachers goes far deeper than repertoire. Classical piano training develops a rigorous understanding of the physical mechanics of playing: how the arm, wrist, hand and fingers work together to produce a rich, controlled sound.

From a student’s very first lesson, I pay close attention to posture, hand position, and the weight and angle of each finger on the key. These details shape both sound quality and long-term technique and bad habits formed early are genuinely difficult to unlearn.

In-person teaching

Why lessons need to be in person

A piano lesson is a physical, tactile experience. I can see immediately whether a wrist is collapsing, whether a finger is falling on the key at the wrong angle, whether unnecessary tension is creeping into the shoulders.

I can demonstrate the exact weight of touch needed to produce a singing tone rather than a punched note. I can adjust a hand position in real time, or sit alongside a student at the piano to show how a phrase should feel as well as sound. These are things that simply cannot be replicated through a screen.

For children · Ages 5 and upwards

Piano lessons for children

I teach children from age 5 upwards. My approach is patient, encouraging, and structured. Every lesson begins with a short period of quiet time, a few moments for the child to arrive properly and be ready to learn, free from phones and distractions.

I build proper technique from the start, develop confidence alongside musical ability, and prepare students for exams if they (or their parents) wish. Parents are welcome to stay and observe lessons and many find it rewarding to watch their child’s progress firsthand.

Music lessons do more than teach piano. They build confidence, improve language and communication, develop concentration, and give children tangible achievement that carries over into school and life.

For adults · Beginners and returners

It is never too late

It is never too late to return to the piano, or to begin. Many of my most rewarding students are adults coming back to an instrument they loved as children, or starting entirely fresh in their fifties, sixties, or beyond.

The riding-a-bike effect is real: what you once knew comes back, often faster than you expect. And the life experience you bring to music as an adult is not a disadvantage, it is an asset. A deeper emotional connection to what you are playing, and a real understanding of why it matters.

I am patient, non judgemental, and entirely flexible about your goals. Whether you want to work towards exams, prepare for a performance, or simply play for your own enjoyment, I will meet you where you are.

Advanced · Exam preparation · Grades 6–8 & Diploma

Advanced students and exam preparation

I teach students up to Grade 8 (Royal Schools of Music) and have experience preparing students for diploma-level performance. If you are working towards higher grades, auditions, or simply mastery for its own sake, I can support you.

My teaching at advanced levels focuses on refining technique, deepening musical interpretation, and building the confidence needed to perform under pressure. I tailor lessons to your individual goals and adapt the pace to fit around other commitments, school exams, university, or work.
